The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) supports the Drug Free Communities (DFC) Program, which provides grants to community-based coalitions to strengthen the infrastructure among local partners to create and sustain a reduction in local youth substance use. Recognizing that local problems need local solutions, DFC-funded coalitions engage multiple sectors of the community and employ a variety of environmental strategies to address local substance use problems.
LEAD Phillipsburg: Learn, Educate, Advocate, Develop Drug Free Community Coalition was developed to reduce substance use for youth in Phillipsburg and the surrounding sending districts. LEAD Phillipsburg will collaboratively build capacity and demonstrate leadership to effectively integrate prevention and environmental strategies to decrease underage drinking, tobacco and marijuana use among youth.

Parent to Teen Educational Video

The video showcases a few of the key components to having a productive conversation including active listening, creating "win-win" comprises, and using even tones.
A special thank you to Qia & Cameron Walters, and Catholic Charities for working with the LEAD Phillipsburg Coalition to make this video for the community! Additional videos will be forthcoming.

Hidden in Plain Sight |
LEAD Phillipsburg and Warren Hills Community Coalition present: HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT. The Hidden in Plain Sight video provides participants with a digital version of a mock teen bedroom set-up to explain various trends of teen substance use, signs, symptoms, and lingo in an effort to raise awareness about substance use disorders. Keely Rehman, LEAD Phillipsburg Project Coordinator, and Sarah Lake, Warren Hills Community Coalition Project Coordinator, are both prevention specialists who review where to look in the mock bedroom, what to look for if substance use is already suspected, and what to do if substance paraphernalia are found.
Hidden in Plain Sight will also be made available at various public events to provide participants an opportunity to explore a mock teen's bedroom on their own before the prevention specialist reviews it with them. The experience provides resources and tools for parents and community members to identify further prevention tips, programs, and services available in Warren County.

To kick-off National Red Ribbon Week, several community partners joined forces to host a LIVE DRUG FREE event on Thursday, October 24th at the Firth Youth Center!
Families enjoyed a healthy dinner from La Bella Via, visited various community resource tables to learn more about local prevention services, participated in activities including face painting and glitter tattoos from a local artist, and had a chance to win some awesome raffle prizes!
More importantly though, a panel of community professionals shared information and data on the current vaping epidemic. The panel included: Jess Szczepanik (Center for Family Services-Prevention Connections), Keely Rehman (LEAD Phillipsburg Coalition), Amy Craig (PHS Substance Abuse Counselor), Dr. Doug Corwin (Pulmonologist at St. Luke's University Health Network), Tracy Mazzucco (Warren County Health Department), and Justin Koeller (Phillipsburg Police Department Sergeant & School Resource Officer). The panel discussed the physical effects of vaping, legal consequences, school policies, marketing tactics used by Big Tobacco Companies, cessation resources, and more. There was a great deal of discussion and even some "myth-busting."
A special thank you goes out to Warren County Regional Coalition: Healthy and Safe Communities and St. Luke's University Health Network for collaborating with us to make this event happen! We're so grateful for all the community partners who are always willing to pitch in to help educate Phillipsburg families!
