What is Becoming #GOALS? The FYC has developed Becoming #GOALS to build the resiliency of P'burg youth who have been or are likely to be exposed to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Becoming #GOALS includes a curriculum to foster grit, optimism, ambition, leadership, and self-sufficiency skills, while also providing opportunities for socialization, enriching experiences, and access to mentorship. Becoming #GOALS will increase resiliency and mitigate the potential negative impacts of ACEs and strengthen the ACE-aware community in Phillipsburg.
ACES? What are those? ACEs stands for Adverse Childhood Experiences and can include things like physical and emotional abuse, neglect, caregiver mental illness, and household violence. Research adopted by the NJ Dept. of Children and Families shows that the more ACEs a child experiences, the more likely they are to suffer from things like heart disease and diabetes, poor academic achievement, depression, substance abuse later in life, and early death. What are the programs like? Programs are developed to foster grit, optimism, ambition, leadership, and self-sufficiency skills. Topics vary and may include guest speakers and/or activities based on basic budgeting, health & wellness, simple automotive maintenance, music therapy, nutritious cooking, and much more! How do I sign up? The only form required is the FYC Waiver/Emergency Contact Form. If your child already has a 2022-2023 FYC Membership complete, then no additional paperwork is required. Once this is complete, your child can show up at any Becoming #GOALS program. Copies are available at the FYC. Staff can also mail a copy upon request. Just contact [email protected]. Is there a cost? No. The program is free. I am from out-of-town. Can my child attend? Becoming #GOALS is open to all Phillipsburg School District and sending district youth in grades 6th-12th. Do I have to send my child to every program? No, you can pick and choose which programs your child attends. Attendance is not mandatory and pre-registration is not required. How are staff trained? All FYC staff are listed with the Department of Children and Families, Office of Licensing. Staff are First Aid/CPR certified and take a series of required Child Health & Safety Classes. Staff also have a Mandated Reporting Training, as well as Orientation. All Staff are required to have a Criminal History Record and Child Abuse Clearance on file, per regulations. I want more info!
